1 TB in GB
1 terabyte (TB) is 1,000 gigabytes (GB). In Windows a 1 TB drive still shows about 931 GB. Below you read why, with a conversion table.
1 terabyte (TB) is 1,000 gigabytes (GB). In Windows a 1 TB drive still shows about 931 GB. Below you read why, with a conversion table.
| Unit | Value in 1 TB (decimal) |
|---|---|
| 1 TB in GB | 1,000 GB |
| 1 TB in MB | 1,000,000 MB |
| 1 TB in KB | 1,000,000,000 KB |
| 1 TB in bytes | 1,000,000,000,000 bytes |
Drive manufacturers and most cloud providers calculate in decimal: 1 GB is 1,000 MB and 1 TB is 1,000 GB.
Computers traditionally calculate in powers of two. Then 1 kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes, 1 gibibyte (GiB) is 1,024 mebibytes and 1 tebibyte (TiB) is 1,024 GiB. Windows shows GiB, but calls it GB.
A 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Divided by 1,073,741,824 (the bytes in one GiB) that is about 931 GiB, and that is what Windows shows as "931 GB". So no storage has disappeared: the unit is different. The file system also takes up some space.
| Unit | Bytes | In GB / GiB |
|---|---|---|
| 1 TB | 1,000,000,000,000 | 1,000 GB |
| 1 TiB | 1,099,511,627,776 | 1,024 GiB, about 1,099.5 GB |
| Terabyte | Gigabyte |
|---|---|
| 0.5 TB | 500 GB |
| 1 TB | 1,000 GB |
| 2 TB | 2,000 GB |
| 5 TB | 5,000 GB |
| 10 TB | 10,000 GB |
| 100 TB | 100,000 GB |
About 250,000 photos of 4 MB.
About 250 HD films of around 4 GB each.
Millions of text files. Office documents are usually a few hundred KB.
The backup of several laptops. A single laptop often has 256 GB to 1 TB.
The numbers are a rough indication. The actual file size differs per camera, codec and document.
1 TB is 1,000 GB if you calculate in decimal, as drive manufacturers and most cloud providers do. If you calculate in binary, 1 TiB is 1,024 GiB.
Because Windows calculates in GiB (dividing by 1,024 per step) but calls the unit GB. 1,000,000,000,000 bytes is about 931 GiB.
1,000 GB is 1 TB.
